HIT THE JUICE
UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones is a juicer…vegetable juicer, that is. Juicing provides vital nutrients, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals to help repair muscles and strengthen your immune system. Flip to page 84 for more info on letting the juice loose.
SNACK ATTACK
The reputation of popcorn as a healthy snack food popped up a few notches, as a new study found that it contains more polyphenols (antioxidant substances) than many fruits and vegetables. Air-popped popcorn is the healthiest way to go, as long as you don’t douse it in salt and butter.
RUB-A-DUB-DUB
Researchers have discovered that a 10-minute massage can help reduce post-workout muscle inflammation. While massage is a widely recognized therapy for relieving muscle tension and pain, the research suggests that it also triggers biochemical sensors that can send inflammation- reducing indicators to muscle cells. In addition, massage signals muscles to build more mitochondria, which plays an important role in healing.
WRAP ’EM UP
Make sure to wrap your hands before you spar or hit the heavy bag or speed bag. Your wrists and hands have delicate bones and tendons that need added support. When you’re ready to start throwing bombs, slip on a pair of Hayabusa’s new Tokushu gloves that are backed by university research to provide superior support and prevent injuries.
SHOULDERING SHOWTIME
The Around the World plate exercise targets the anterior, posterior, and lateral deltoids in a rotational movement that also strengthens rotator cuff muscles. This lift is ideal for rehabbing an injured shoulder or as a great warm-up to any upper-body workout. To perform the exercise, move the plate in a gyroscopic motion around your head.
