The hot topic in UK MMA for the past week has been Alex Reid’s withdrawal from his scheduled BAMMA III encounter with Tom “Kong” Watson on May 15th.
Whilst many fans are sceptical with the situation regarding Reid’s exit from the contest, his camp are citing a knee injury as the source of the pull-out. A documentary centred around Reid’s preparation for the bout was first aired last week as there is a vested public interested in the fighter turned celebrity after his win on Big Brother and marriage to glamour model Katie Price aka “Jordan”.
Watson, who trains at Greg Jackson’s Submission Fighting in Albuquerque, New Mexico, was understandably frustrated with the situation as he posted on his official site:
“From my perspective I am so angry at the way he has disrespected me in his behaviour. I fought and signed to MFC in Feb and won quickly with a KO so could have fought immediately in March, April or also on the MFC on May 7th. He has shown no concern for the money I have spent travelling back and forth and in camp for this fight. My cornerman for May has a medical issue which means he has to paid out of his own pocket to fly first class from Canada for May.”
It appears that all is not lost for Watson, however, as a reliable source close to the fighter has revealed that terms have been agreed with former UFC and IFL star Matt Horwich. The bout is undoubtedly a step in the right direction for Watson following his devastating KO over travis Galbraith in Candian promotion MFC back in February.
Contracts are being signed imminently by Horwich, who faced Ricardo Almeida and Dan Miller inside the Octagon, won the IFL middleweight championship and holds victories over the likes of Krzysztof Soszynski, Mike Pyle and Josh Burkman.
Watson is looking to further his career and face the best opposition possible on his route to the top. “Suave” certainly provides an interesting clash for “Kong” and it will be a great benchmark for his improvement at the Jackson camp.
