At FIGHT! Magazine, we believe there is a need for a completely objective and unbiased ranking system for fighters to replace the myriad subjective rankings that have become skewed, in many instances, by fighter popularity. In an effort to address this issue FIGHT! Magazine brings you its computerized rankings system which takes into account a fighters strength of opponent, strength of performance, and frequency of activity.
Bellator crept closer to the conclusion of its third season last night at the Licouras Center in Philadelphia, saw its lightweight champion put a beating on another UFC vet and put its welterweight belt on a new champ. Full results can be found here.
In his second non-title lightweight superfight since winning the belt (the first being a win over Josh Neer), Eddie Alvarez spent most of the first two frames beating the hell out of Roger Huerta before the doctor waved it off due to swelling around Huerta’s eye. Alvarez came into the fight ranked #11 in our Lightweight Rankings, Huerta came in at #55, and each fighter walked out of the cage with his ranking intact. Due to Huerta’s relatively low value, a stoppage win over him wasn’t enough to move Alvarez into the top ten.
Ben Askren took ownership of the Bellator Welterweight Championship with a five-round decision win over Season One tourney winner Lyman Good, vaulting himself from #26 to #14 in our Welterweight Rankings. Good falls from #20 to #39 after suffering his first loss. In other welterweight action, Levon Maynard slipped from #134 to #139 after his stoppage loss to unranked Rick Hawn. Hawn, who will participate in Bellator’s season-four welterweight tournament, clocked his second qualifying fight and will enter our rankings following his next bout in the circular cage.
In a featherweight feature fight, former EliteXC champ Wilson Reis notched a split decision win over WEC vet Deividas Taurosevicius. Reis moves from #36 to #24 in our Featherweight Rankings, while the Lithuanian grappler falls from #24 to #36.
IFL veteran Jamal “The Suit” Patterson re-enters our Light Heavyweight Rankings at #71 after a period of inactivity and PRIDE veteran re-enters our Lightweight Rankings at #98. No other ranked fighters appeared on the card.
