At FIGHT! Magazine, we believe there is a need for a completely objective and unbiased ranking system for fighters to replace the myriad subjective rankings that have become skewed, in many instances, by fighter popularity. In an effort to address this issue FIGHT! Magazine brings you its computerized rankings system which takes into account a fighters strength of opponent, strength of performance, and frequency of activity.
According to heavyweight prospect Daniel Cormier, he wants more time in the cage to develop but it’s difficult to find heavyweights who want to fight him. It appears that Strikeforce is allowing him to pursue fights wherever he can get them; after fighting in Australia on July 31, the former Olympic wrestler was healthy and back at work quickly, so he decided to jump on last night’s King of the Cage card as a late replacement to challenge for Tony Johnson Jr.’s heavyweight title. Cormier beat Johnson with relative ease, moving from #41 to #39 in FIGHT!’s Heavyweight Rankings and becoming King of the Cage Heavyweight Champion. Johnson is unranked.
No other ranked fighters appeared on the card.
It’s likely that Cormier will move again tonight after the dust settles in Irvine, where former UFC Heavyweight Champion Tim Sylvia fights UFC/Strikeforce vet Paul Buentello. Cormier is scheduled to fight Jason Riley at Strikeforce: Houston on Aug. 21.
