At FIGHT! Magazine, we believe there is a need for a completely objective and unbiased ranking system for fighters to replace the myriad of subjective rankings that have become skewed, in many instances, by fighter popularity. In an effort to address this issue FIGHT! Magazine brings you its computerized rankings system which takes into account a fighters strength of opponent, strength of performance, and frequency of activity. Let’s see how things shook out after WEC 47: Bowles vs. Cruz.
Bantamweight was the most affected division as four top ten fighters stepped into the cage. Newly crowned WEC Bantamweight Champion Dominic Cruz ascended from #3 to #1 in our rankings while Brian Bowles moved into Cruz’ recently vacated spot. Joseph Benavidez stayed put at #2 with his submission victory over Miguel Torres, who dropped from #5 to #10. Scott Jorgensen moved from #6 to #5 in the division with his win over unranked Chad George.
Javier Vazquez moved from #25 to #19 in the Featherweight rankings with his submission victory over Jens Pulver. Pulver ends his storied career with a drop from #33 to #39. Bart Palaszewski made a big jump – from #101 to #66 – in the Lightweight rankings with his come-from-behind submission victory over Karen Darabedyan, who does not yet have enough qualifying fights to be ranked in our system.
L.C. Davis fought his way into the top ten at Featherweight with his decision win over Deividas Taurosevicius. The fighters swapped spots, with Davis moving from #17 to #8 and the Lithuanian moving in the opposite direction. Fredson Paixao moved into the #21 spot at 145 with his win over unranked Courtney Buck.
At Lightweight, Leonard Garcia won a Fight of the Night bonus for his split draw with George Roop but slipped from #28 to #31. Roop benefitted slightly, climbing from #91 to #85. Anthony Pettis moved into the Lightweight Rankings (#73) with his KO of Danny Castillo, who fell, from #74, completely out of the rankings. Ricardo Lamas got a bump from #75 to #61 at 155 with his win over unranked Bendy Casimir.
