Release the Dogs: MMA World Expo Seeks to Satiate NY's Starved Fans
by FIGHT! contributor Eric Killelea
MMA enthusiasts in New York are beginning to resemble unfed pit bulls. They’ve been waiting for what seems like forever, licking their chops, eager for their state to lift its ban on mixed martial arts. And though that day has yet to come, Paul Paone intends to feed these dogs what he can for the time being.
Paone’s World MMA Expo will be held Oct. 24-25 at the Jacob Javits Center in midtown Manhattan. The promoter has scheduled a full complement of “panel discussions, live presentations, autograph & photo sessions and an exhibit hall filled with the top MMA products, supplies and MMA schools.”
Additionally, top trainers will be showcasing their skills for the attendees. 2004 U.S. Olympic judoka Rhadi Ferguson will run a clinch and take down demo, American Top Team boxing coach Howard Davis Jr., will offer stand-up tips, and three-time Abu Dhabi Combat Club submission grappling champion Marcelo Garcia will lend his knowledge of ground fighting. MMA gear and training equipment companies will be out in full force and several top-flight fighters are scheduled to make appearances, including Wanderlei Silva, Matt Hughes, Pete Spratt, and Rich Clementi.
